5. Not having enough horsepower

After figuring out your Mbps, you should determine the speed that you actually need to work with. To know this, you need to know how many people use your internet and what they are using it for. For someone who is living alone, 6Mbps should be enough. But for a family, especially for a family that streams frequently, a connection of at least 20 Mbps should be required in order to avoid slow internet speed.

6. Being on an overloaded channel

The channel that your wi-fi is on can also be what is causing the issue. Different wi-fi signals can be connected to different channels, much like the radio. You can analyze this by using tools like Network Analyzer Lite that works with iOS or Wifi Analyzer for Android devices. If you come to the conclusion that your wi-fi channel is overloaded, you can manually pick a new one.

7. Do a modem reset

Check your devices to see if they are all slow or if it is just your phone, for example. If it is just your phone, you probably have a hardware problem. But, if every device is slow, this is most likely related to the internet connection.

You can try the most basic trick in the book, which is basically to reset your router – turning it off and then turning it back on. Check to see if the lights have all come up the way they were supposed to, and your internet is working, it means everything is fine. If not, it is time to call technical assistance because there might be something wrong with your router.

8. Your wi-fi is placed in a bad spot

This might sound a little dumb, but your router is placed in an open space will improve your wi-fi speed remarkably. Keeping your router inside a cabinet or a closet, on the other hand, will have the opposite effect. For people with big homes, a distance problem might also be the reason your internet connection is so slow – test it by coming closer to your router and then moving farther away. If you can see that there is a difference, maybe it is time to invest in wi-fi extenders.
