This Is How You Can Keep Your Laptop Battery Healthy

Last Updated on March 24, 2021

When learning about laptops when younger, the most important lesson we should have learned is how to take care of the laptop battery. The latter is extremely important and can become damaged easily, even after very few rookie mistakes.  There are many beliefs on how to keep a laptop battery healthy and how to charge it correctly, when, and where. But here is the thing: a laptop battery will not last as long as you’d wish, but with a little maintenance, it can do better than most batteries. Continue reading to learn a few tips that can ensure a longer, healthier laptop battery.

    1. Keep the battery cool

Many people overlook this step!  You should always keep a laptop battery cool, especially when it’s already hot outside. The excess heat is no good for the battery, the processor, or your lap. Once the battery is hot, its health will degrade very quickly. In fact, when you use your laptop daily at 32-55°, the battery will lose 20% to 30% of its overall charge. Same as not leaving your child or dog in a hot car, remember not to leave your laptop battery at a hot temperature. You can use this laptop holder that will keep it from getting extra hot while keeping you comfortable, too!

    2. Don’t charge it fully

Do you know about the 40/80 rule? It’s a rule when you have to keep your laptop battery charged between 40% and 80%. However, this rule is not directed to the new lithium-ion batteries, but it’s still a good way to maintain their health.  Also, if you happen to charge it to 100%, then do NOT leave it plugged in. It’s something we all do, and it’s the reason why the battery life becomes shorter.

    3. Perform shallow discharge

Instead of waiting till it’s 0% to charge it, the lithium-ion batteries work best when you charge them right after they get discharged a little bit. Basically, you should meet the needs of your laptop battery in the middle. According to a study, when a battery discharges to 50% is much better than 0% or 90% for its long-term life.
