Top 7 Wi-Fi Security Tips to Avoid Being a Target for Hackers

Last Updated on March 4, 2021

    2. Do You Know What a VPN Is? So, Use It!

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a communication channel that uses encryption and authentication techniques that allows you to have Wi-Fi security and online data exchange with greater security and confidence. That way, you can and should use a VPN, as this is how you stay more protected online. The WPA2 wireless security protocol allows hackers to spy on recorded Wi-Fi traffic without having your password – hence the reason it is being replaced by WPA3, where that no longer occurs. By doing a VPN check, you can encrypt DNS requests, have an additional layer of protection, Wi-Fi traffic monitor, and, above all, make life difficult for a hacker who wants to see what you are doing online.

    3. Disable Automatic Connection When Accessing Wi-Fi Networks

One of the best Wi-Fi security tips that you should implement is to disable the automatic connection whenever you access Wi-Fi networks. There are networks that you access more often, and the fact that you always have to enter your password can be annoying. But there is a solution: you need to disable auto-connection whenever you connect to a new Wi-Fi network. Thus, you do not need to be always entering the password, do not access it automatically and can really control which Wi-Fi networks you connect to. It’s just another click you use, and it can make all the difference!

    4. Never Make Use of Hidden Wi-Fi Networks

How to protect your devices from viruses? You may even have the will or the best intention to prevent hackers from unaware of the Wi-Fi network where you are connected. But the truth is that by accessing a hidden Wi-Fi network, you are facilitating the tracking of your mobile Wi-Fi device and all the smart devices you can use – they are always “calling” the hidden network, and that will identify their presence. Once identified, there are several ways to bypass security protocols and try to improperly access your smart devices with viruses and other threats.

    5. Pay Attention to the Router: Disable WPS Functionality

How to avoid getting hacked? To avoid being easy prey for hackers, you need to pay special attention to the router you are using. As a rule, networks with WPS enabled are vulnerable and subject to PIN force attacks, among other types of attacks such as Reaver or WPS-Pixie. And, normally, this type of attack gives the hacker access to your WPS configuration pin and, consequently, your passwords. In order for this not to happen and for your Wi-Fi password to be secure, it is essential that you disable the WPS functionality in the router’s menu settings (WPS Pin or WPS Setup). In cases where the router is already compromised, that is, when the hacker has the WPS configuration, you need to buy a new router.
